NZ On Air funds a range of productions that contribute to Maori mainstream broadcast television. The agency’s current Maori Strategy (Te Rautaki) has been in operation since 2000. While there has been a considerable degree of growth in specific genre over that period, the broadcasting environment is now is very different.
Maori Television and Te Mangai Paho have had a profound impact on the growth of Maori television. Maori Television in turn, is proving popular with Maori and Pakeha audiences alike. Mainstream broadcasting however, still requires a Maori presence.
NZ On Air is committed to ensuring that its Maori policy is relevant. We plan changes to the Rautaki that we expect will enhance the mainstream Maori television experience. We wish to ensure that our plans are relevant, and that the industry supports our new direction.
In early May registered attendees will be emailed a discussion document setting out some of the key issues and a detailed programme. Please email Anita Roberts anita@nzonair.govt.nz by 30 April to register (for catering purposes).
